In the tradition of Manet's cafés—the public rooms where the private dramas of modern life quietly unfold—a woman has claimed a beautiful corner for herself.

Around her, warm ochres, browns and rusts mingle with unexpected passages of blue, while light from the window separates her momentarily from the city beyond. There is something of Hopper's urban solitude here: one person surrounded by empty seats and unoccupied space, physically among the world yet, for a little while, entirely alone.

But she is not necessarily lonely.

With a macchiato in hand and nowhere she needs to be for the moment, she can finally hear herself think.

She begins the quiet accounting we all undertake from time to time: love, work, money, choices made and choices still waiting. Am I doing all right? Am I heading in the right direction? What is missing? What might still be possible?

The café becomes more than a setting. It is a temporary refuge between the life she has already lived and the life still waiting outside the window.

She has no answers yet. She doesn't need them.

Sometimes it is enough to find a beautiful corner, tally up a life, and hear yourself think before stepping back into the world.
