Entering Manet's Mystery 2026
Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère has fascinated viewers since 1882, largely because of its enigmatic mirror. The reflection appears inconsistent with the position of the central barmaid, prompting generations of scholars to debate whether Manet intended a literal reflection or something more psychologically complex.
In my interpretation, I chose not to resolve the ambiguity but to embrace it. The woman who faces us occupies a quiet, contemplative space, while the figure in the mirror may be another barmaid, a colleague, a parallel presence, or perhaps another aspect of the same woman's existence.
Where Manet's original often evokes emotional distance and urban isolation, my rendition explores warmth, memory, and human connection. Rather than reproducing Manet's answer, I sought to continue his question. I did not solve the mystery—I simply entered into it because it made me feel as if I were in his Belle Epoque.
